Archaeology

The main focus of the group is around archaeological research. Whilst in our infancy, this section is a little sparce. However, over time it will become the main hub of the site. Typical subjects to be covered:

- Basic archaeological techniques and tools, including excavation and cleaning.
- Details from past digs in the Sleaford area, including dates, locations and finds.
- What to look out for in Old Sleaford  - landmarks, earthworks, etc.
- Fieldwalking finds
- Details and images from the Summer 2013 test trench at Old Place. (Coming Soon!)
- and what we expect to find at the upcoming Old Place dig!

Artist's impression of a corn dryer - (St Giles' Avenue, Sleaford)

Substantial stone foundations of the corn dryer on which this illustration is based, were uncovered during the 1960-63 excavations at Old Sleaford, prior to the construction of St Giles' Avenue, Sleaford.

Due to the relatively elaborate nature of this design, it has also been proposed that it is quite possibly a malt kiln, used for drying barley used in the beer making process.

Artist's impression of a roman villa - (The Hoplands, Sleaford)

This illustration depicts how the roman villa discovered within the grounds of Sleaford Police Station on Boston Road may have looked when Mareham Lane (in the foreground) was a thriving Romano-British thoroughfare.

This excavation took place during 1997.

This photograph shows the discovery of a metalled section of the East/West roman road by local archaeology company APS within the last ten years. As can be seen, the road service is well preserved....
